Sarah Race's award-winning short documentary on Barbarian Press!

In 2015 Sarah Race asked if she might make a short film about us and the press, and the
result, her first film, won the Hot Docs short subject award, and went on to be shown in
many independent film festivals in Canada, the States, and internationally. Now we are
able to make it available to those who might have missed it. Please click on this link.

Some Comment on our Books

On An Eye Made Quiet

[An Eye Made Quiet] is here. And it is absolutely lovely. Carefully designed and printed and bound in daffodils!
Jean-françois Vilain, Subscriber

I was very pleased to receive the book this morning. I am still taking it all in, but I am blown away by the loveliness, the fineness, of this edition. All so beautifully and crisply printed.
James Barker

On Pastoral Elegies

I was especially impressed by the design and binding of [Pastoral Elegies] … [Having] the slipcase and spines of the book and folder in the same silk and with flat spines works really well in presenting the book as a single slab. The thin strips of green paper behind the central grey panel on the front cover are very effective and the binding has a more contemporary feel which works well with some of the more antique touches in the typography, together adding to the timeless feel. In fact, as I was looking through the book, it was the feeling of timelessness that came to the fore. … I am very pleased to have both these poems in an edition which gives them space to breathe and which is such a pleasure to hold and read.
Richard Barnett, Subscriber

On The Marriage of True Minds

The Marriage of True Minds is another triumph for you. The selection of poems seems inspired, and the engravings beautiful and appropriate. It is a splendid tribute to a clearly happy marriage and a lifetime of work in your magnificent press. The layout, the printing, the binding [are all] in perfect harmony. Thank you once again for making these beautiful and important books.

On Wayzgoose Pamphlet Two: The Dingbat...

Your Wayzgoose Pamphlet on the Noble Dingbat is a delight from start to finish.
Robert Bringhurst, Poet, Typographer, and author of The Elements of Typographic Style

On Sudden Immobility: Selected Poems of Molly Holden

I received your magnificent book. I really don’t know what to say. It is stunning. What a triumph for all of you. This is no slim volume of poetry. What an expansive, glorious tome!
B. MacKeen

‘From the beginning, publishing private press books that collectors actually want to hold and read, over and over again, has always been the Barbarian Press stock-in-trade.’ Jack Katz, Subscriber

Barbarian Press
the continuing saga...

Spring has sprung: the daffodils and cherry blossoms have come and gone to be replaced by the bluebells, violets, and apple blossoms of mid-season in our courtyard garden. Our grandson, Michael, continues to explore his world with growing curiosity and aptitude. At the Press, life moves along at an equally spritely pace. The last copy of An Eye Made Quiet sold in March, and the third in the Loose Canons series of poetry pamphlets devoted to the work of English poet, Edward Thomas, was completed in April. Two other projects are in simultaneous production at the hands of the four Barbarians.

The first is a selection of poems by Thomas Hardy to be illustrated with engravings by Jane Randfield, an artist whose work we recently discovered in our search for a new and suitable illustrator for the Hardy poems. Her obvious affinity for the English countryside and her deft renderings of nature, animals, and people made her the obvious choice. Jane began her work on the book by making the journey from her home in Bath to Dorset to sketch Hardy’s birthplace cottage. The sketch transformed into a wood engraving will accompany the first poem in the book, ‘Domicilium’, which describes the homestead some forty years before his birth. This will be followed by some ten or more engravings scattered throughout the text, providing a visual accompaniment that will enhance and deepen a reading of the poems. Apollonia Elsted and Lea Sánchez Milde are currently setting and printing the text; Jan will print the engravings as they arrive from England. We expect publication of Weathers: A Selection of Poems by Thomas Hardy to be published in the Fall of this year.

The second, inevitably, is our decade long undertaking, Bordering on the Sublime: Ornamental Typography, the Printing Revival, and The Curwen Press. Crispin is finishing the last chapters of the book. That done, he will hand-set the pages of text, and Jan will print them on sheets of Hahnemühle Biblio in the Vandercook Universal III. The end seems in sight, with a projected completion date of the end of this year. Alanna Simenson of Mad Hatter Bookbinding will then dedicate much of 2026 to binding the edition in three states. A few copies of each state are still available, but reservations are highly recommended for those still remaining.
