HORSE WHISPER PRESS
January 2003
The publisher writes:
A Charge of Horse is the first book published by Horse Whisper Press, my
own private imprint, which I have started as a way to help support my
horse, Kamsa hamnida – Korean for ‘thank you’ –
or ‘Kami’ for short. My name is Apollonia Elsted (‘Polly’ for
short), I am 14, and my parents own Barbarian Press. I have grown up
watching them print books, and I have printed some small pieces and broadsides,
but this is my first big project. The texts are by Shakespeare (excerpts
from Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew), the Book of Job, and the Mother
Goose rhymes, and I am also including a poem of my own. I am very grateful
to Walter Bachinski, Simon Brett, Peter Lazarov, Abbie Rorer, and Jim
Westergard for helping me by providing the wonderful engravings.
A Charge of Horse was
handset in Van Dijck with various display types and printed on Silurian
paper, with the illustrations printed from the blocks. I set most of
the type myself, with help from my father, and we designed the book together.
Under my mother’s guidance I printed it on a Vandercook proof press.
56 copies are sewn onto jute cords and laced through printed wraps with
a watercolour wash, of which 26 copies (the Deluxe Edition) will be put
into slipcases made by Natasha Herman in Amsterdam, accompanied by an
extra suite of the engravings laid into a decorated folder.

A NOTE FROM BARBARIAN PRESS:
We feel we should mention that Polly is also planning to use some of the
proceeds of this first book to help fund her first trip to France. One
of her friends is living there for a year with her family, and Polly has
been invited to visit. We are very proud of the initiative Polly has shown.
We also want to express gratitude on our own part to Walter, Simon, Peter,
Abbie, and Jim for so enthusiastically helping Polly with this project.
